Creating Tuesday - our autism journey

I was up a lot last night but thankfully it wasn’t as bad as it had been during my previous chemo treatments. Owen slept until after six. He was so incredibly happy and laughing as soon as he woke up. I love mornings like this.

He wanted to play his games with me. Technically he wanted me to play the games and he watched but I told him I would watch him play. We ended up taking turns. He talked so much to me though. I love these interactions and when he wants me to do everything with him. When he won I held up my hand and he gave me five with strength. He usually taps it lightly.

I asked him a question and he said, “Umm.” It was like he was processing it and then answered. I was pretty shocked because he doesn’t generally answer me like that. He usually says yes or no even if the answer is something else but to hear him say “umm” felt huge to me. It was him in the moment and thinking about his response. These are the moments that make the tears flow in my eyes.

He was off to school and home again before I knew it. He was extremely calm when he got home and very hungry. He was eating his snack and happily asking for dinner while he was eating it. Food was his focus all night long and I know he will be taller than me very soon.

He wanted a “long bath” as he calls them. He laughed so much and talked to me in so many languages. He wanted me to ask Siri for all the different translations and would then repeat what she said, laughing the whole time. He then told me he wanted a Dalmatian named Frisbee. He was talking about dogs and then he said he wanted 101 of them. I think he might have been watching a few too many videos thinking he was going to get 101 dogs.

He got out of the bath and took his towel to wipe his head. He grabbed it and wrapped it all around his head. More progress and more excitement from this momma. Life skills in action and I’m loving every part of it. He watched himself in the mirror as he pulled it back and forth. He didn’t dry the rest of himself but this was a big step and I am thankful.

He knew tomorrow was the 11th and he was ready for another day at school with some of his favorite people. I love that he is telling me more about his days and what he is experiencing. These are my gift moments and I am thankful. The laughter from my sweet baby O is what makes my world so bright. Find your happiness, laugh until you are silly, and pray for a great tomorrow. Smiles to all and donut daze!

I'm Lynn Browder. Owen's Mommy. The best moments in time are when I get to see the smile on his face and that giggle come from his heart.
