Greet Saturday - our autism journey

Owen was ready to break out grandma from the hospital so he could have his Saturday. He was up at four with a little screaming and a couple of trips back and forth to me but in the long run, he successfully managed to stay in his room until five. I tried to not even acknowledge the screams and push through the moment. I reminded him that five o’clock was the magic hour and that helped. I was exhausted and wasn’t feeling my best but we got our day started.

He was calm after his first initial screamfest and I was glad that he was able to work through staying in bed until five. He talked about all his days ahead. And when I mean all his days ahead I mean all his days ahead like through Christmas, and even into next year, and technically several years from now when he goes to high school.

One of the big topics continued to be his therapist’s clothes that she wore on Thursday. I talked to him again about giving her kindness and grace. I explained that she can wear what she wants to wear. When I talked to his therapist on Thursday, we both agreed he says the right words, but he can’t connect to all of the emotions, and so he continues to spiral when she and others are not wearing what he expects them to wear even when he knows it will be something different.

The day continued with more talks about the days ahead. He wanted to know what his grandma would be wearing at Thanksgiving and Christmas. He also told me that we had to celebrate her in December since that was when her birthday was. He listed several other birthdays that needed to be celebrated and more holidays. This led him to talk about seeing his best friend and when they would be doing arts and crafts.

He knew he wasn’t going to see his grandma because she was in the hospital, but he still asked about her all day long. He told me he wanted to go pick her up and take her home. I tried to explain to him that she still wasn’t feeling well and again he was repeating that, but he wasn’t making the connection that she was sick. He asked if she would get to come home tomorrow and I keep praying that it will happen.

Bath time, dinner, and bedtime all fell into place quickly. Thankfully he stayed calm most of the day after his initial morning. His prayer before bed was that he could sleep so that he could go to church tomorrow. I had the same prayer. He told me that he was laughing like a boy so that I would laugh. I love that he wants me to be happy. Focus on the good stuff and know that you can change the world. Smiles to all and donut daze!

I'm Lynn Browder. Owen's Mommy. The best moments in time are when I get to see the smile on his face and that giggle come from his heart.
