Knowing Monday - our autism journey

Owen slept all night. Some nights I don’t even try to sleep. Last night was one of those nights. When he woke up he was in a pretty good mood and very talkative. He had a lot on his mind and he wanted to get it all out of the way starting with the fact that we didn’t have sausage dogs because they didn’t bring them with our delivery. This would be a part of the recurring theme shared throughout the day with several other foods that were left out of our order. He was also once again very excited about the driving video and couldn’t wait to watch it.

I told him he was not going to therapy today. At this point, I didn’t know for sure about his vision therapy but I had a feeling we would not be going. He stood in the doorway watching me eat a banana and I got a phone call. It set him off. He started yelling that it was the doctor. He was already focused on me eating the banana and then the phone call at the same time was too much for him to handle. He was screaming in the background as I was trying to talk. This was the call I was waiting for them to tell me his vision therapy was canceled. When I got off the phone he started running around saying the names of all the ringtones. He wanted the sound to be the Night Owl or Crickets and it wasn’t so this upset him more. It amazes me how much stuff he has floating in his mind.

He came to me and I had my bunny ears off. He wanted me to put them on and I told him I would in a few minutes but my head was hot. He started licking my head so I said let’s go play a game, trying to distract him. He wanted to play the Fruit Ninja game in his Nex Playground. I played a game and didn’t do great. He said, “Aw bummer.” After we finished he randomly said “Sorry Mommy” and I said, “What for?” He said, “licking your head.”

He had been pretty calm throughout most of the day but he wanted all his things to happen. He needs his routine and he is afraid his week is going to be messed up again. He kept asking me if he was going to see his grandma tomorrow and his teacher on Wednesday. I tried to explain that it should happen but both days had numerous factors not to mention if he doesn’t sleep. His foot started tapping and this meant business. Once again I was trying to distract him so that he didn’t have a meltdown over everything.

Bedtime came and he wasn’t interested in it at all but he was out very quickly after needing three hugs and many more confirmations about Wednesday, skipping over Tuesday. I pray he sleeps tonight and his favorite leprechauns get busy doing what they are supposed to be doing. I said to him “You know what” and he replied, “I love you.” He knows he is loved. That makes my heart happy. Let your happiness shine so bright that it spills over to everything you do. Smiles to all and donut daze!

I'm Lynn Browder. Owen's Mommy. The best moments in time are when I get to see the smile on his face and that giggle come from his heart.
