Mighty Thursday - our autism journey

Sirens blaring it’s always a shocker. What a way to start our day. Owen and I were already up. He was beyond excited to start his “ther A py day therapy day!” It was sometime around four when he came singing his praises of “sleeping upper night,” and dreaming big about school and therapy but then sometime before six, the sirens sent us to the basement.

The sirens stopped and thankfully there was nothing immediately near us that had affected us. Owen goes through checking to make sure all his people and places are fine and if he needs to send in the leprechauns. He doesn’t want anything to happen to everyone he loves so fiercely. His heart is golden.

He put his pirate in the microwave and started it. I am going to have to lock it or unplug it even though I am generally with him you never know as he says “what’s going to happen.” He has done it multiple times now but never turned it on. I talk with him each time and he laughs. He said, “No pirate in the potty poop in the potty” and laughed hysterically, following it up with “Mommy loves laugh.” This dude is getting the lingo down.

Our district was on a two-hour delay but I was thankful he was still getting to go. He is learning to read a clock and tell time but his internal clock can tell time better than any external clock ever can. He wanted to know if the bus was on its way and asked me every few minutes, peppered with continuous questions about his people. He was off soon and excited to be going to one of his happy places.

Talk about a talker. He was on a rollercoaster of excitement telling me about his day. He was repeating some things but moving forward on conversations and only circling back occasionally. I asked him if he knew what he wanted for dinner. He didn’t answer me right away and then randomly said, “Chick-fil-A” about ten minutes later. He told me we “don’t give his therapist a hard time concentrate on breathing,” the shape puzzle, and hopscotch. He continued to say, “We always be kind.”

We went to Chick-fil-A after his therapy and he ate all of his meal when we got home. They both said he was a bit distracted but was able to do a lot of the exercises. The distraction of the morning I’m sure had some to do with it and the rest of his week was thrown off numerous times.

On the way home he said, “Mommy had grey haircut need a yellow one.” He is ready for my hair to be “yellow long hair” again. I told him it would take a few years if I grew it to my waist again. He said, “We got time.” Every minute I spend with my sweet baby O makes my heart happy. Let time be on your side and find what makes you happy. Smiles to all and donut daze!

I'm Lynn Browder. Owen's Mommy. The best moments in time are when I get to see the smile on his face and that giggle come from his heart.
