He was very calm all morning and was excited about going to see his grandma. He wanted her to pick him up so they could drive by all his favorite fire hydrants on the way to her house. It always amazes me the things that he wants to see. He remembers every part of his journey.
They had a great day. He wanted two campfires and s’mores. He has started eating the chocolate and not waiting for the s’mores to be made. I am surprised that he is eating more chocolate or sweets now.
They made popcorn together and played games on his tablet and her laptop. I’m thankful for the incredible bond they have and all that she gives him from her heart. He ate a lot at their house and wanted pizza on the way home.
He tried to give me directions but I reminded him that he wanted his turn first so I was going home the way I wanted. He stopped screaming immediately. That felt like progress as well
I don’t like to focus on any of the backward steps he takes but when he gets busy doing something he forgets to use skills he knows. Bathroom habits are hard to keep him focused on when he doesn’t want to do it. Eating with utensils or picking up a whole piece of pizza and eating a bite instead of picking at it to get a bite are things we are constantly working on. He breaks apart his food by squishing it off the rest of whatever he is eating. It is a habit he started when he was very little and we have been working on it for years. I’m thankful that his teachers and support staff over the years have helped him come this far with how he eats. I love the days I don’t have to remind him to not put food in his toes. I know that he will get this though and that’s why I focus on the good stuff.
A full belly and a long day for Owen made bedtime come quickly and he was mostly calm. He was ready for church tomorrow and excited about seeing his favorite people. I rejoice in those moments and I’m thankful for the progress he made today. Be happy with the little steps because they lead to the greatest of victories. Smiles to all and donut daze!
