Life happens when you have something else planned and it sure was a different kind of day for us. Owen woke so excited about his day. He slept until a little after five and all he could talk about was seeing his friend.
I got my coffee and he made it to the “white bed” before I even got back. He was under the covers at lightning speed. He was laughing at the game he was playing and talking to me about seeing his friend. He couldn’t wait to go to school.
His big concern was whether or not his friend was going to be there and if he was going to be wearing blue pants. We got dressed and Owen was in his blue pants. We finished getting ready and outside we went. He stood in his position to watch for the bus and he got so excited when he saw it turn the corner. On to the bus, he went and off to school in a great mood.
The threat of bad weather was in the forecast but I prayed all morning it wouldn’t be bad. By eleven in the morning, the sirens were going off and my electricity was out. I prayed and prayed it wouldn’t hit us. They let us know the kids were all sheltering in place and his teacher said Owen was doing fine. I was in my basement.
The storm came through and thankfully our house was fine. So many lives were changed today and I pray for everyone. After about an hour the sirens stopped going off. I prayed some more and hoped Owen was still doing fine with it all.
The school’s electricity and phones were down but they were able to contact me to come pick Owen up. It’s normally a less than ten minutes drive. The traffic on the main road was bumper to bumper and the highway was sitting. I reached the school finally and went inside to get Owen.
His teacher brought him to me and they told me he did well until the end not knowing what was happening. When we walked out to the car he told me about the power being out and he was very concerned for his favorite people and all his therapy places. He wanted to make sure everyone was okay. He repeatedly asked me if he was not going back to school or therapy. I assured him that he would be going back but it might take a few days. He saw his friend walk out of school with his dad and he wanted to make sure I knew he didn’t have blue pants on but he still wanted him to go to the park with him. That’s progress.
On the way home I took the back roads and it was a little quicker but it still took over an hour for the round trip. I prepared him in the car that our power was out but I knew he would still have a hard time with it. He immediately went from room to room turning on and off the switches. Thankfully for his room, I have a lightbulb that is battery backup so it will automatically stay on for him. He sleeps with the light and he is so happy to see it on.
Our internet is also out but thankfully my phone has stayed connected so I use it for his tablet. I’m praying that he will sleep tonight. I have a rechargeable battery lightbulb in his lamp so the color is a little different but at least the light is on the same way. This should help him sleep.
